where the 9-year-old boy was hit last night. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, frank. sfpd was involved in a long pursuit that they followed this man out of downtown san francisco into hayward where he was eventually detained. police believe he is the man who hit the 9-year-old boy crossing in the crosswalk at mission and new montgomery. the suspect was detaped in hayward. the front end of the vehicle had major front end damage from hitting other vehicles as he fled san francisco. police brought several witnesses it hayward to look at the vehicle and they say that that white toyota pickup truck matches the one involved in the hit-and-run accident. the accident happened last night when a boy was walking just in front of his family: it was driving northbound on new montgomery which is the wrong way on the street. it turned left on mission street hitting the boy as he was standing in the crosswalk

at mission street. >> the suspect continued driving westbound on mission street where it hit several other vehicles some of which were parked and some in the road. the suspect fled the scene we're told entering the freeway south of market. >> reporter: the young boy remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries this morning. we have received initial reports that that boy and his family may have been visiting san francisco from philadelphia for the giants game yesterday. we are working to confirm that. police are still investigating the cause of why that man was driving so erratically and why he was driving down new montgomery in the wrong direction in the first place. back to you. >> has there been any talk of drugs or alcohol? >> reporter: no confirmed reports from police at this point about that. >> thank you.

kristy seifkin live in san francisco, thank you. breaking news now. a man is under arrest this morning suspected in the stabbing death of a woman in west san jose. the victim found dead in an albany drive apartment early this morning. officers found a 48-year-old man near the crime scene. he was arrested. investigators are now trying to determine a motive. 6:03. the july jobs report came out about 30 minutes ago and it's not as bleak as expected. the nation's unmillennium rate fell to 9.1 -- unemployment rate fell to 9.1% last month a tenth of a point lower than june. the economy also added 117,000 jobs. both of those numbers are better than economists had expected. asian markets closed substantially lower on worries that the u.s. may be sliding back into recession. and europe's debt crisis is getting worse. european markets took big hits today. it came after the dow had its worst single day since 2008.

it fell 513 points yesterday. we'll look at the opening bell in 30 minutes hoping for better news there. well, the partial shutdown of the faa is almost over. that means airport construction workers will be back on the job including hundreds here in the bay area. elizabeth wenger is at oakland international airport where they are feeling the effects. >> reporter: good morning. construction workers will likely breathe a big sigh of relief this morning. construction could begin as early as next week, next monday on the new air traffic control tower they have been building here. a lot of political wrangling on this. late afternoon yesterday, politicians reached an agreement to restore funding temporarily to the faa. projects like the oakland tower have been on hold now for a couple of weeks and workers have not been getting paid because of bipartisan finger- pointing over funding to the faa. but late yesterday senate majority leader harry reid announced a temporary deal. the compromise will also save

construction jobs at sfo and san jose international on a any tower, ramp and taxiway as well as 70,000 jobs across the country. we are still waiting for the president's signature which some workers say cannot happen soon enough. >> they can call me right now and i'll be there in two hours working with my tools. and then i have lost my pension benefits, medical benefits and vacation benefits. >> reporter: and this is live look right now at that tower that they have been building. they have been working on it again no workers there now but hopefully they will be on the job next monday. this is a temporary agreement. it expires september 16. now, it doesn't address some of the most contentious issues including what led to the shutdown in the first place including cuts to rural airports. so we are crossing our fingers that the president hopefully signs this today. so again could go back to work

dangerous. good morning, folks. happy friday. if you are just getting uhm, we found a little sunshine for you today if you are just getting up. mount vaca cam looking inland sun coming up on the bay area. some fog and low clouds down below and boy, it is very gray in some parts of the bay area. here it is, low clouds and fog approaching the coastlin and drizzle. a great beginning to the day, more sunshine toward the afternoon. be careful roads a little slick at the coast. this afternoon we'll find sunshine in the valleys and temperatures as high as the mid- 80s so a little warmer as we head into the afternoon. a lot of 60s inside the bay 70s into the santa clara valley and at the coast cool. 50s and 60s with low clouds and fog even some continuing drizzle. it looks like a trough in place now for today and probably tomorrow as well so similar temperatures as we slide into at least the first part of the weekend. not a bad weekend but starting out with gray skies. 90s into the central valley today, high as 78 in lake tahoe and sunny there. 65 and mostly cloudy into the monterey bay. around our bay you will see 73

in san mateo, sunny in union city, warm in morgan hill. sunshine and warmer temperatures mid-80s into antioch and brentwood. toward walnut creek sunshine this afternoon and about 83 degrees. clouds inside the bay, 68 berkeley, 66 richmond. in the north bay we'll see temperatures in the 50s and 60s toward the coast. you will see sunshine and 70 and 80s inland. and so tomorrow we'll repeat that once again as we'll see similar temperatures around the bay area but by sunday, it looks like the numbers begin to warm up a little bit. high pressure will be building back in. temperatures headed back to normal. maybe some 90s toward monday and tuesday. all right. let's check on those roads with gianna. >> thank you, lawrence. we are going to start with mass transit. word of some delays on the capitol corridor. train number 518 running about 22 minutes behind schedule between oakland and emeryville. this is due to train equipment problems. so did plan for that. the rest of mass transit, bart 50 trains on time right now,

ace, muni, caltrain, problem- free systemwide. accident eastbound 580 at north flynn road over to the right shoulder. noncommute direction but we are still seeing some delays in that area westbound slow anyway for the commute direction through the altamont pass, 15 minutes west 580 altamont pass to 680. no accidents on the westbound side. antioch brake lights westbound looks like slow and go between hillcrest to loveridge. not bad though into pittsburg, in fact highway 4 looks good towards the eastshore freeway. golden gate bridge not a bad ride as you work your way into san francisco. however, you're still going to see delays south 101. 12 minutes from 37 to 580. no delays going northbound. jumping over to the eastshore freeway, a few sluggish conditions just a little slow and g40 miles per hour as you work your way westbound at berkeley into emeryville. approaching the bay bridge metering lights are off and slight delay in a couple of lanes there at the toll plaza but overall traffic light clear across the upper deck into san francisco. earlier roadwork wrapped up, no delays out of san francisco into oakland. the rest of our bay area

loveridge. westbound 4 busy anyway for the morning drive. details on that coming up. but right now back to you. >> thank you. 6:31. this morning a 9-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was hit inside a crosswalk by a driver going the wrong way. kristy seifkin is in san francisco and she has some new information on the hit-and-run driver as well as that young victim. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, grace. yes, we have gotten initial reports that that family that was here with the 9-year-old boy may have been visiting from philadelphia and were here for the giants-phillies game. we are still working to confirm those reports at this point. this was a long pursuit for sfpd. they eventually detained the suspect in hayward. they believe the suspect was responsible for hitting the 9- year-old boy at the busy crosswalk mission and new montgomery about 10:30 last night. here's some pictures of that suspect as he was being detained in hayward. you can that the front end of the truck -- you can see that the front end of the truck had

some bad damage because he hit several vehicles parked on the road and moving vehicles. sfpd brought witnesses to look at the car and they say that that car, a white toyota pickup truck, matches the one that was involved in the hit-and-run accident. the accident happened last night when the boy was walking just in front of his family and he was hit at the mission street crosswalk. >> a large white toyota pickup truck was proceeding northbound on new montgomery which is the wrong direction. the truck turned left westbound on mission street and struck the child, who was apparently in the crosswalk. >> reporter: the driver didn't stop after hitting the boy and continued west on mission street hitting numerous cars as well as moving vehicles. then he hopped on the freeway just south of market street. and that pursuit continued until he eventually was detained in hayward. now, the boy is in critical condition right now with life- threatening injuries.

and police are still investigating why this man was driving the wrong way down the street. it's mission street just over my right shoulder that's only southbound. the man was driving northbound. they are still trying to figure out why this guy was going the wrong way. we'll have more details for you as we get them. >> thank you, kristy seifkin in san francisco. in other news a woman is dead and a man is in custody this is as a result of a stabbing in san jose. police found the body early this morning when they were called to an apartment on albany drive on the city's west side. now, officers found a 48-year- old man near the crime scene. they took him into custody and are trying to determine a motive. it is the city's first new homicide in nearly two months although this year's pace still higher than normal. 6:33. a surprising jobs report is driving the market higher this morning easing the impact of yesterday's big sell-off on wall street. the nation's unemployment rate fell a tenth of a percent in july to 9.1%. these are live numbers now. the market as you can see,

rebounding in a big way up 156 points so far. it just opened. 117,000 jobs were created last month. both those numbers are better than economists expected. the market reflecting that early on this morning. now, markets all around the world though fell today after the worst day on wall street since 2008. yesterday asian around european markets closed lower on the worries that the u.s. may be sliding once again into a recession. and europe's debt crisis is getting worse. 86% of americans say the economy is in bad shape. that is the finding of a new cbs news/new york times poll. a record 82% of americans disapprove of the way congress is doing its job. and they are divided over the president's handling of the debt ceiling talks. 47% disapprove, 46% approve. kcbs moneywatch reporter jason brooks has your moneywatch report in less than 10 minutes, plenty to talk about there. he will be coming up shortly. just a couple of hours the

senate will approve a bill ending the partial shutdown of the faa. elizabeth wenger is at oakland international airport with what this deal means for hundreds of bay area construction workers and really in the last couple of weeks, it's meant no paycheck, right, elizabeth. >> reporter: yes. if you have been an airline passenger you probably haven't noticed a difference but paychecks, jobs, that's the bottom line here. for the past couple of weeks a lot of projects, construction projects, at bay area airports and airports all across the country have been put on hold including this one behind me here at oakland international airport. that's the new air traffic control tower being built since last fall so politicians reached an agreement late yesterday to restore funding temporarily to the faa. projects like the oakland tower have been on hold for weeks and workers haven't been getting paid because of bipartisan finger-pointing over funding for the faa. late yesterday afternoon, senate majority leader harry reid announced a temporary deal. the compromise will also save

about 22 minutes behind schedule between oakland and emeryville. this is due to train equipment problems. but again the rest of mass transit is right on time. got a wreck eastbound highway 4 right at loveridge blocking the right lane. westbound slow for the morning ride. back to you. >> thank you. east palo alto police want help in finding two murder suspects. 20-year-old fidel silva and 19- year-old jaime cardenas are accused of gunning down two people in separate shootings last month. one happened july 13, the other july 19. between those dates, the two are believed to have gone to colorado and killed a person there on july 16. two suspects in an antioch armed robbery are going to be arraigned today. this is the case in which 16- year-old hassan ford appeared to be kidnapped triggering an amber alert statewide. well, now police believe he was involved in a plot against his employer al's barbershop. also arrested in this case 23- year-old eric walker.

40 years after a man known as d.b. cooper hijacked a plane a bay area man is talking about his experience on the flight. his name is jack almstad. he lives in livermore now. 40 years he was on board with marquis cooperrer. he didn't know it was being hijacked at the time but looking back he believes he did see a bag carrying the $200,000 ransom. he says he even shared a moment with mr. cooper. >> i said, gee, we are up here so long, if we waited any longer we can have thanksgiving up here, because it was the day before thanksgiving. well, this gentleman turned ash -- he was on the right-hand side of the plane, he turned around and looked at me and smiled. >> cooper parachuted out of the plane. it's still not known what happened to him or that money. an oklahoma woman recently came forward a few weeks ago saying she believes it's her late uncle lynn doyle cooper who was actually db. but the mystery continues. this morning san francisco's fire department is welcoming 35 new firefighters

as we get into sunday they should begin to improve warming up a bit. 90s inland next week. let's go to our pleasanton camera along 580. crowded for your friday morning commute. all those taillights headed toward 680 so give yourself some extra time. jumping to our maps, as you work your way through the altamont pass, livermore area, accident eastbound 580 at north flynn on the right shoulder but slight spectator slowing passing the scene in the area. altamont pass getting busy anyway between 205 and grant line. 18 minutes from the altamont pass to 680 right now. slow to loveridge on the westbound side of highway 4 through antioch. we do have an accident on the eastbound side right at loveridge. it is blocking the slow lane. may cause a backup there but the good news is that's the noncommute direction. over to the eastshore freeway we go. we are seeing some slight delays westbound from berkeley to emeryville. 38 miles per hour through

it's friday. you have good news, right? >> good morning. >> i can see it this morning, grim faces as people came to work this morning not knowing what to expect after the massive drops yesterday more than 500 point loss for the dow, biggest in fact since october of 2008. at the height of the financial crisis. market is coming back a little bit this morning thanks in part to the july jobs report coming in better than expected. nothing to go crazy over. but a gain of 117,000 jobs is about 40,000 more than expected. also, there was a revised upwardly revised gain of 56,000 jobs combined for may and june, that also helps. the unemployment rate surprisingly edged down a tenth of a percent to 9.1%. that though is mainly the result of nearly 200,000 workers simply giving up their search for work. we really need to see that overall top line number of around 250,000 to 300,000 to

meaningfully work away at unemployment. but still part of the reason why the stock market sold off so much yesterday was that really it wasn't much expected in the jobs report today so being that it's better than expected, that could provide a little bit of relief but we have a long ways to go to catch up to yesterday's absolute beatdown. let's look right now. the dow is up by 97 points. nasdaq up 2. s&p up 9. oil picking up a little bit about 25 cents at $87 a barrel near the mid-february high. gases prices may go down a bit. linkedin record its earnings better than expected. but its shares are down almost 5%. and san jose-based brocade communications makes network gear says it will miss revenue projections when it reports earnings monday. its shares are down 25%. >> ow. >> frank and grace? >> can you coin that phrase, absolute beatdown? >> reporter: we heard that

the child was hit by a white toyota pick-up in san francisco a hit-and-run rampage puts a 9-year-old in the hospital with critical injuries. he was hit by a white toyota pickup in the city last night. a man driving a similar truck was stopped in hayward a short time later. the child was hit in a crosswalk on mission street in san francisco. he was with family members but no one else was hit. police say the drive was going the wrong way at the time. and he went on to hit a number of vehicles before getting on the bay bridge. the big story today is how is wall street doing. let's go live to the big board right now. it is down 11. earlier though a big jump about 150 points. it was up after the july jobs report came out. the nation's unemployment rate fell to 9.1% last month better than a lot of economists expected. the economy also added about 117,000 jobs. but really a lot of people are

saying that those numbers are going to be twice as good in order to see a real balance. so we'll have to see what happens on the dow today. in the meantime hundreds of airport construction workers in the bay area could be back at work as soon as monday. today the senate is expected to approve an end to a two-week partial shutdown of the faa. thousands of jobs across the country would be restored. time now is 6:58. i have some family in town from boston. they haven't seen the golden gate bridge because it's shrouded in fog! will it go away, lawrence? >> summer in the bay area foggy out there now. it's going to be slow to clear again but once it does we should squeeze in some sunshine. temperatures cooler than average. mid-80s on the warm end, i think in some of the valleys very gray out toward the coastline and, of course, we have that drizzle too. tomorrow kind of a repeat but i think the weather will improve as we head in toward sunday. could very well see some 90s into monday and tuesday. you want to enjoy sonoma county fair? should see some sunshine there and some warm temperatures. should be about 85 degrees. of course lots of food and
